Four dead, six injured as lightning strikes Gandhigram

MIAO, Jun 5: Four persons were reportedly killed when a lightning struck following a thunderstorm while working at a farm in Gandhigram in Vijoynagar circle on Monday at around 11 AM.
Reportedly, the incident occurred when the people were gathered to extend help in a fellow villager's farm.
At least six other persons, including students are said to have received injuries and are in critical requirement of medical attention. The administration, till the filing of this report has been making fervent arrangements to evacuate the injured.
The dead have been identified as Jalina Yobin (12), Chanisa Yobin (14), Chathaye Yobin (13) and Sholida Yobin (38).
Among the injured are four women, one man and an eight year old boy.
Air service is the only option to carry out immediate evacuations from a place like Gandhigram, which takes at least four to five days of trekking to cover a distance of over 100 kilometre to reach the nearest town of Miao. Even if a helicopter is pressed into service, the nearest helipad is about 25 kilometres from Gandhigram, and the administration is making arrangements to make a temporary landing ground.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu in a late night message said chopper service will be made available on 6th June to Vijoynagar to evacuate the injured persons. He directed the district administration to immediately provide all possible assistance to the victims.

Pipeline damaged in Poma, water crisis lingers on

ITANAGAR, Jun 5: The water crisis in Itanagar will take at least another five days to resolve, informed Capital Division, PHE & WS Executive Engineer, Tadar Mangku.
Speaking to this daily, EE Mangku informed that a massive rock slide at Poma has caused severe damage to the water pipeline. "The rock slide is extremely heavy and we are unable to take drilling machines to the affected site. Everything is being done manually. Our engineers, along with labourers are working hard to repair the damaged pipe," EE Mangku said.
He also informed that it will take a minimum of five days to completely restore the water supply. "We understand that citizens are facing a difficult time and therefore, we appeal to them to bear with us. Tanker services will be put in to gear to mitigate the problem. Citizens should use rain water to meet their needs for now," added the Executive Engineer.
Every year during monsoon season, major pipelines supplying drinking water to Itanagar from Poma and Senki rivers get damaged, causing citizens to suffer in turn. The state government needs to consider the plight of its citizens and chalk out a long term plan to deal with such situations in the future.

AAPSU demands govt to convene all party meet on refugee issue

ITANAGAR, Jun 5: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) on Monday said that it would launch rigorous democratic movement if the state government fails to convene an all party meeting by including all the 60 MLAs and three MPs over the vexed issue of Chakma and Hajong refugees on June 10 next.
The demand came on the sideline of its all federal unit meeting on granting of citizenship issue to Chakmas and Hajongs.
Speaking at a press conference here at the Arunachal Press Club, AAPSU President Hawa Bagang said that they are not against granting Indian citizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees, but are against allowing them to settle in Arunachal.
Cautioning the centre from making Arunachal Pradesh a dumping ground for refugees, Bagang said that if they were allowed to settle in the state, they would soon claim all benefits of Indian citizenship, which would in turn be harmful for the indigenous people of the state.

RGU ultimatum to govt on bad roads

ITANAGAR, Jun 5: Raising its voice against the pathetic road leading to the state's premiere educational institution, the Rajiv Gandhi University, its student union today served a 10 days ultimatum to the state government for taking up the matter.
The Rajiv Gandhi University Students' Union (RGUSU) stated that if the state government fails to comply with its ultimatum then they would boycott the new admission of students.
Addressing reporters on Monday, RGUSU General Secretary, Prem Taba said that if any student gets affected by the boycott and that his or her academic career gets halted, then it would be the responsibility of the state government.
Justifying their mode of protest, which would directly hamper the academic career of students, Taba claimed that they had no such intentions, but the state government's negligence has left them with no other choice.
He also informed that they have met concerned authorities and the Chief Minister himself over the issue earlier, but besides assurances, nothing else has managed to materialize.

ITANAGAR, Jun 5: The counsel for a Nerul (Mumbai) based RTI activist sought a CBI inquiry into the alleged 'violations' with respect to the plot allotted to the Arunachal Pradesh Government in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, meant for Arunachal Bhawan.
"As per information obtained by RTI activist, Sanchu Menon, there have been violations with respect to the plot," informed advocate Vinod D Gangwal, the lawyer for the RTI activist.
Based on the information obtained by the RTI activist, the lawyer lodged a complaint with the Prime Minister and eight others, including Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh and Director of Industries, GoAP to conduct thorough investigations.

He was reportedly disheartened after witnessing the sordid state of affairs there, and submitted a brief report on May 2, 2017 to the higher authorities and to additional secretary (GAD) and the secretary/ commissioner (GAD) for their knowledge and perusal and further action /instructions in this regard.

"Due to the influential approach of the M/s USR Ltd, CIDCO has not taken any steps in this regard to represent the case properly before the Bombay High Court," it alleged.
"The law officers of CIDCO seem to be in cahoots with the builders and officers of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh," it further claimed.
"Its farcical and ludicrous that the Government of Arunachal Pradesh is involved in such sleazy practice, thus it will demean the dignity of the government itself; otherwise this prestigious property which CIDCO has carved and allotted for the specific purpose to build Arunachal Pradesh Bhawan would not have been sold to the private builder," the letter said.
"Since there is involvement of huge amount of more than Rs 350 Crores, enquiry must be initiated against the builder, officers of the Arunachal Pradesh Government through CBI or through some other independent agency," it demanded.
"In fact, there is no mention of the state government guest house in the building," the letter said, adding that, visitors to the Arunachal Bhawan are barred from the reception area.
The entry is allegedly from the back and even the security guard at the exit gate is unaware of the location or existence of the Arunachal Bhawan, it further claimed.
"The builder USR Ltd has given property to jewellers and other big business entities on lease and continuously getting huge rent of the property, even all the bills of maintenance is paid by Government of Arunachal Pradesh."
According to local realtors, the current market rate for commercial property in the region is Rs 25,000 to Rs 350,000 per sq ft.
Plantation, awareness prog mark World Environment Day
ITANAGAR, Jun 5: Massive plantations and awareness programmes marked the World Environment Day observation in Arunachal, on Monday.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu joined the school children in a tree plantation programme at Art of Living campus at Jollang village, organized by the Department of Forest and Environment and Climate Change.
About 200 students from six schools planted more than 300 saplings, mostly fruit bearing ones.
"When children are made part of nature conservation efforts, it has positive impact in their life," Pema said, while expressing happiness at the participation of school children, and asked the Forest Department to conduct nature conservation programmes in schools and colleges involving the students.
"Our tribal culture is deeply intertwined with the nature -
"Arunachal is known for its green cover, which enables us to receive extra grants from the Centre," said the Chief Minister and called upon the people to protect the nature.
He discouraged unplanned destruction in the name of development and urged all the departments to see that the development activities have minimal impact on nature.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein said that this year's theme "Connecting People to Nature" is quite appropriate. Narrating how human beings have disconnected from nature with the passage of time in the pursuit of development and comfort, he said "We have degraded abundant natural resources through our own degrading activities, like rampant forest cutting, hunting and fishing".
He pitched for restricting hunting and fishing in "shrine areas" in the state and also to ban rampant fishing by means of explosives, poison, electric shocks and other such activities. He also said that Kamlang Tiger Reserve is deteriorating day by day, and needs to be protected from further deterioration.
Parliamentary Secretary for Forest and Environment, C T Mein also stressed upon the need to protect and save forests and to plant more trees to ameliorate the environment. Chief Secretary Shakuntala Gamlin elaborated on the environmental issues concerning the climate change and measures to combat climate change.
PCCF Omkar Singh highlighted the meaning and importance of this year's theme "Connecting People to Nature" of World Environment Day, 2017.
Later, the Chief Minister distributed prizes to the children who won in the essay and drawing competitions. He also released a book, 'Orchids of Arunachal', a newsletter, 'Arunachal Envis' and a pocket book of laws for forest officers.
Earlier in the morning, the Chief Minister and others also took part in a tree plantation programme at Hollongi, followed by inauguration of Forest Check Gate at Hollongi, where the Chief Minister addressed the people of the area on importance of conservation of nature.

Brigadier J S Budhwar, Station Commander, Aalo inaugurated the drive by planting a tree at Aalo Military Garrison. Abhinav Kumar, District Forest Officer, Aalo with his staff took the initiative to plant ornamental trees like gulmohar, nahar an ajar along the roads leading to Mechuka and Pangin.
At Tezu, a mass tree plantation drive was organized from Club Road to GHSS gate, followed by a film show at Amik Ringya hall. Around 60 students from four different schools participated in the programme.

Taja Yaying becomes first PhD holder in Mathematics
ITANAGAR, Jun 5: Taja Yaying became the first PhD holder from the state in Mathematics for his thesis titled, "Study on Arithmetic Summability and its Applications".
Dr Yaying, who conducted his research under the supervision of Professor Bipan Hazarika, Department of Mathematics, RGU, was conferred the PhD by the Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, Doimukh recently.
Apart from being the first PhD degree holder from the state, Dr Yaying is also the first Chancellor's Gold Medalist of the department, which he received in 2012. He has also published four research papers in reputed international journals.

PATUK, Jun 5: In a recent public meeting at Patuk regarding the PMGSY road project from Parsi Parlo to Damin, the Parsi Parlo Area Development Committee (PPADC) appealed to all to desist from creating any hindrance on the ongoing project.
The house, which saw the participation of PRI members, youths, gaoh burahs and general public, agreed that the PMGSY road project from Parsi Parlo to Damin, being executed by the TTC Infra Limited Company and its executing agency RWD is a vital project, and when completed, would benefit people of both the circles.

ITANAGAR, Jun 5: The Abu Rikam Charitable Society (ARCS) has deeply mourned the demise of Head Gaon Buri (HGB) of Sagalee Township, Techi Nabam Rich, who passed away at the age of 56 after a brief battle with cancer on June 2 last.

Selection trials begin at RG Stadium
NAHARLAGUN, Jun 5: The selection trial to select the state junior team for Junior National Women Football Championship began at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Naharlagun on June 5.

The incident comes just few days after BJP spokesperson was told by an NDTV anchor to leave show on air for his abusive behavior. NDTV for years has been target of BJP and greater Sangh parivar for its liberal view. Infact often it is cited as last remaining bastion of liberal media in India. Therefore naturally it became target of Narendra Modi led BJP govt.
What worries people most is the way raid was conducted with malafide intention of harming image of NDTV and trying to intimidate its journalists. It is shocking that the CBI conducted searches on the NDTV offices and residence of the promoters without even conducting a preliminary enquiry. It is a blatant political attack on the freedom of the press. On their part NDTV clarified that it has never defaulted on any loan to ICICI or any other bank and stated that it adheres to the highest levels of integrity and independence. Such kind of vindictive action by ruling BJP regime is against the spirit of Indian democracy. It is clear that independence and fearlessness of NDTV has unnerved the ruling party. They are resorting to intimidating tactics using CBI to coerce NDTV to toe into line. Strangely most of the media houses remain silent and did not even report about the incident. However Editors Guild has condemned the move. Hopefully media fraternity will join hand together and fight against such evil design of targeting press.

Terrorizing people in the name of Gaurakshak
Dear Editor,
Through the column of your esteemed daily I would like to write about ongoing circumstances of India. At the very outset a question revolves, isn't the assumption of the Hindus that India now has become the land of the Hindus is erroneous? Certain law to ban cow slaughter is arising though this thing is not a new issue. Every day we hear about many brutal incidents linked with this issue. Videos recorded and uploaded in social media show how brutally the Muslim fellows are beaten by some people with the title “Gaurakshaks”. The Hindus are acting outrageous in the name of cow slaughter.
The demand for cow slaughter is not a new one. During initial independent days this issue was among the major concern. "How can I force anyone not to slaughter cow unless he is himself so disposed? It is not as if there were only Hindus in the Indian union. There are Muslims, Parsis, Christian and other religious groups here.” This is an excerpt from Gandhi's prayer discourse of July 25, 1947. The Wire first published this article on Gandhi Jayanthi in 2015, in the light of the shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh, where a Muslim family was attacked by a murderous mob on the suspicion that they had some beef in their home. Doesn't it mean coercion against those Indians who are not Hindus? What if it happens in our state tomorrow?
Some prosperous Hindus encourage cow slaughter. True, they do not do it with their own hands. But who exports cows to countries like Australia and other where they are slaughtered and whence shoes manufactured from cow hide are sent back to India? In villages Hindus makes bullocks carry huge load which almost crush the animals. Does not it hurt the animal?

Education scenario of Vijoynagar area
Dear Editor,
A delegation of All Yobin Students Union (AYSU) called on the education minister Honchun Ngandam, on Sunday in the presence of WRD minister Kamlung Mossang. The education minister gave a patient hearing to the problems and challenges the student community particularly is facing due to the unavailability of educational facilities in Vijoynagar area. The local MLA Mossang also confirmed about the challenges and added that due to shortage of teachers, he had been supplementing through the MLALAD fund.
The minister made very specific commitments to upgrade Govt. Upper middle school in Gandhigram village. And finally, all the facilities required to make educational system work efficiently will be provided with special provision.
